Sailing in Upper Egypt

An iconic trip in every way, a cruise on the Nile in Upper Egypt should be on everyone’s bucket list. This time, we are taking the trip several notches up as we will be using a brand-new luxury dahabeyya (traditional sailboat) that will provide a totally upgraded experience.

 The trip kicks off with a couple of days in Cairo to visit the new Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara, before flying to Luxor. In Luxor, we stay at the Old Winter Palace while we visit the temples of Karnak and Luxor, the West Bank, and also take an excursion north of Luxor to visit the very well preserved Temple of Hathor at Dendera. 

Next, we board the dahabeya for a 4-day cruise towards Aswan. Along the way, we visit several ancient Egyptian temples while enjoying the serene rural landscapes rolling slowly by, and even stopping in a couple of spots to take a dip in the Nile or a walk in a traditional village. In Aswan, checkin at the Old Cataract Hotel, and from there visit the colorful Nubian villages and of course the impressive Abu Simbel temple, while also enjoying this beautifully located iconic hotel.

Detailed Itinerary

February 23Arrival in Cairo and transfer to Fours Seasons Nile Plaza. Rest of program TBD based on time of arrival.
February 24A private guided visit to the stepped pyramid and Serapeum of Saqqara, followed by lunch reservations at Khufu overlooking the Giza Payramids. In the afternoon, a private guided visit of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Free evening.
February 25Morning flight from Cairo to Luxor. Transfer to the Winter Palace Hotel. Free lunch, before a guided afternoon visit of the Karnak temple complex, followed by sunset and evening visit of the Temple of Luxor. Dinner reservations at Sofra in the souk of Luxor.
February 26
This day is dedicated to the West Bank of Luxor. Start with a visit to the magnificent tombs at the Valley of the Kings, including to the tomb of Seti 1 which is limited access. Following that, a lunch break and rest at Marsam, then onto the Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir Al Bahari) and the nearby archeological remains of Madinet Habu. Return late afternoon to Luxor for a free evening and overnight at the Winter Palace.
February 27
Checkout form the Winter Place and transfer by shuttle bus about one hour north of Luxor to visit one of the most beautiful temples: the Temple of Hathor at Dandera. Returning to Luxor, check into Fayrouz Sanctuary, the private dahabeya (sailboat) that will take you south to Aswan. Lunch on board as the dahabeya sets sail.
Feb 28, March 1 & 2
In the morning, cross the lock at Esna. For the next 3 days continue sailing towards Aswan with various stops along the way including the temple of Esna, the temple of Horus at Edfu, the quarries of Gabel El Selsela, El Kab local village, and the temple of Kom Ombo. Enter Aswan in the evening of March 2.
March 3
Checkout of the dahabeya and flight to Abu Simbel to visit the world-renowned temple built by Ramses II. Return to Aswan and check in at the Old Cataract Hotel. Afternoon visit of the protected area of the Nile by motorboat and visit of the Nubian villages. Free evening.
March 4
Morning visit of Aswan High Dam and the unfinished obelisk. Free afternoon to enjoy the Old Cataract Hotel. In the evening, sound and light show at the Temple of Philae.
March 5Checkout from the hotel and transfer to Aswan airport for departure.

The prices below assume all nine cabins on the dahabehya are occupied, whether single or double occupancy.

Price per person is dependent on the final size of the group, as per below:

– Group 0f 14: $6550 in double occupancy; $10200 in single occupancy.

– Group 0f 13: $6600 in double occupancy; $10250 in single occupancy.

– Group 0f 12: $6660 in double occupancy; $10300 in single occupancy.

– Group 0f 11: $6745 in double occupancy; $10400 in single occupancy.

–  Group 0f 9: $6950 in double occupancy; $10630 in single occupancy.

  • Tips

Flights:

  • We will handle your flight reservations from your point of departure to Cairo then Luxor, and from Aswan to your point of departure via Cairo. Flights will be on Egyptair so they can all be in one flight file. We will inform you of the price of the tickets once the trip goes through depending on the price of the flights at the time, but the estimate for the Amman-Cairo-Luxor then Aswan-Cairo-Amman roundtrip is $550 in economy and $1150 in business. We will accommodate other points of departure as well as needed.

Payment and Terms

Trip Status: This trip is open for reservation.

Terms

  1. To confirm your spot, a down payment of $3000 per person is requested. Second payment (50%) is due on October 31. Balance is due on January 15.
  2. Trip will be cancelled if there are less than 9 cabins booked on the boat by November 1, otherwise the price will have to be adjusted.
  3. Cancellation is free of charge if before November 10, or if 9 cabins have not been filled.
  4. Cancellation anytime after 9 cabins are filled or after November 10: 40% (unless a replacement is found).
  5. Cancellation after Jan 1: 70% (unless a replacement is found).
  6. Travel insurance is not included in the price and is recommended for emergency cancellations.
