Beyond Beauty: The Surreal Wonders of Iceland

Optional Extension: The Dramatic Faroe Islands
August 31- Sept 7 2025

A trip of immersion in raw, dynamic nature…Few places on Earth evoke visions of surreal and powerful landscapes as much as Iceland. The island-country where you can literally see the rift valley being created as two continents slowly drift apart is alive with natural wonders and astounding landscapes that are hard to come by all together in any other place.

After discovering the vibrant city of Reykjavik with its food and music culture, we will get up close with geysers and glaciers, explore ice caves and surreal beaches, and soak in geothermal springs. The trip will end with a very unique experience: a two hundred meters descent into a volcano to explore the magma chamber, and we end by an afternoon enjoying the famous milky waters of the Blue Lagoon.

For those who can’t get enough of dramatic landscapes, there is an optional 3-day extension to the Faroe Islands for an unscripted discovery road trip.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Aug 31Arrival in Reykjavik and private transfer from the airport to the hotel in Reykjavik.

In the afternoon and evening, we will take a private walking tour to discover the different aspects of the vibrant capital of Iceland: main monuments, shopping streets, food markets, and local lifestyle and nightlife. We will also have dinner reservations at one of the trendy restaurants where we can dine as a happy local.

Day 2 Sept 1
We begin our adventure by driving north west towards the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the iconic Kirkjufell mountain- one of the most recognizable in Iceland. Spend the day enjoying walks in the natural park and along the black sand beaches. Overnight in the charming and beautifully located Hotel Búðir.

Day 3 Sept 2Check out from the hotel after breakfast and begin touring the famous “Golden Circle”. This includes visiting Þingvellir National Park, the place where the mid-Atlantic ridge can be seen splitting the Eurasian and American continents.

The tour continues to the geothermal area where we will see geysers springing up in the air from the depths of the earth, and then to Gulfoss, one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Iceland. We then take a detour to the “Secret Lagoon” to take a dip and relax in the warm waters.

Overnight at Hotel Grímsborgir.

Day 4 Sept 3After visiting the colorful Kerid Crater, head on this day to the South Coast, packed with natural wonders and mind-blowing landscapes. Start from the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, and the famous “walk behind the waterfall”, before continuing to the awe-inspiring Reynisfjara black lava beach, the Reynisdrangar Pinnacles, and the black Halsanefshellir cave (of Game of Thrones fame). After a quick lunch stop, strap on the crampons for a walk through a lunar landscape of majestic mountains and glaciers towards the blue and black Katla ice cave. We end this unforgettable day at the Hotel Kria in Vik.
Day 5 Sept 4More adrenaline-pumped action on this day: after a beautiful walk along the stunning Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, proceed to the Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest glass ice mass in Europe. Get geared up for an exhilarating snowmobile ride on the glacier, followed by a well-deserved rest at the hot tub and beautiful views of the Hotel Jökulsárlón.
Day 6 Sept 5Kick off the day with a National-Geographic worthy experience at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The blue icy waters of the lagoon are dotted with icebergs that have broken off from the glacier, some of which have dropped on the nearby black beach, and appear to shimmer like diamonds. We will have an immersive experience on the lagoon, going in fast zodiacs on its icy waters right up to the icebergs, and might even spot a few seals along the way. Following that, start driving back east but along the inside highlands, with a stop to take a walk in the beautiful and colorful Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Overnight at the Landhotel.
Day 7 Sept 6We begin the last day with a very unique experience: exploring the inside of a the Þríhnjúkagígar (Thrihnukagigur) volcano. After a half hour walk towards the mouth of the volcano, we will be lowered towards the center of the Earth via an open elevator inside of the only accessible lava chamber in the world. No worries though, as this volcano has not erupted in 4000 years! The descent is 170 meters and takes approximately 6 minutes. We will spend approximately 30 minutes inside the volcano before being lifted up again, and continuing to the famous Blue Lagoon to spend a well-deserved relaxation afternoon in the warm milky waters. We head back to Reykjavik for the last night in Iceland.
Day 8 Sept 7Transfer to the airport for departure. Those who wish will take a flight to the Faroe Islands for an optional three days exploring the dramatic islands with a lightly scripted, discovery road trip. (Please enquire if you are interested in this extension).
